According to the latest data released by the Turkish Steel Manufacturers Association (TCUD), Turkey's steel industry performed well in January this year, not only maintaining its leading position in the European steel production field, but also showing a good growth trend in import and export trade.
Although Turkey's crude steel production fell by 1.9% year-on-year to 3.2 million tons in January this year, this achievement still makes Turkey ranked seventh in the global crude steel producer, surpassing Germany in one fell swoop and becoming the largest steel producer in Europe. At the same time, the market demand for domestic finished steel in Türkiye is also steadily rising, with finished steel consumption increasing by 2.6% year-on-year to 3.58 million tons in January.
Türkiye's steel imports and exports have increased significantly. In January 2025, Türkiye's steel exports increased by 23.1%, reaching 1.12 million tons, and the export volume also increased by 14.7% year-on-year to as high as US$763.45 million. In subdivided export product categories, the export volume of plates was 374,300 tons, a year-on-year increase of 6.6%; the export volume of long materials was 686,300 tons, a year-on-year increase of 25.3%; the export volume of semi-finished products was 61,000 tons.
In January 2025, Türkiye's steel imports increased by 24.9% year-on-year to 1.73 million tons, and the import volume increased by 11.3% year-on-year to US$1.19 billion. Among them, the import volume of plates was 900,700 tons, a year-on-year increase of 22.4%; the import volume of long materials was 98,400 tons, a slight decrease of 0.4% year-on-year; the import volume of semi-finished products increased by a large increase of 32.9% year-on-year to 729,800 tons.
